Jeep Creating Over One Thousand New Jobs in Toledo

Across the country, Americans are starting to see the economy improving in tangible ways, and in Toledo, Ohio, Jeep is putting people back to work.

This week, WTVG, an ABC affiliate in Toledo, reported that unemployed residents were getting prepared for the Jeep expansion which will create more than a thousand new jobs in the area next year. The community is supporting prospective employees by helping them update their resumes and teaching them how to impress an employer in an interview. In particular, the One Village community has rallied for its residents by offering assistance in resume writing and teaching standard computer skills.

Beth Lewandowski, current Secretary of the Neighborhood Representatives on the United Village Council, explained why the community needs to prepare for new jobs, stating, “The job market has changed. The skills that people had when they first got employed out of high school have changed and we know that as a fact.” This early training will make these applicants better employees and create a smoother transition, especially if a prospective employee has been out of work for awhile.

Building the Jeep Wrangler: A Look Inside

Jeep might have a rough-and-tumble public image to maintain, but there is careful craftsmanship put into their popular Wranglers. Last month, the official Jeep blog took a look inside the Jeep Wrangler Assembly Facility in Toledo, Ohio and saw how Wranglers come together.

The Toledo assembly facility is quite impressive. Every day, the 2,500 workers produce 720 Wranglers, and while the workers do have state-of-the-art equipment, there is quite a bit of work done by hand. For example, the plant’s quality specialist Diego pointed out, “The craftsmanship of a windshield – a machine just can’t do, so we do it by hand.”

Despite their high level of production, their assembly facility is working incredibly hard to keep up with demand for Jeep Wranglers. Currently, they are running at maximum capacity, but there are few complaints from Diego who quipped, “Not many people can say, ‘hey, I’ve got a problem, I can’t build enough cars.’” It is a testament to how popular the Jeep Wrangler has become in recent years and how many loyal fans come back to the Wrangler when shopping for a new car.

Jeep Wrangler Production Increases for Toledo Plant

Quote

Jeep Wrangler has been seeing quite a big upswing in sales lately.  With over 122,460 Jeeps sold in 2011, that comes out to a 30-percent increase over the previous year.  Mike Manly, the CEO of Jeep said about the Wrangler’s growth,

“We grew 17 percent and what I was very pleased with when I look back at the year is we continued to see growth in the direction of our 2009 plan.”

More and more people have been wanting to get their hands on the award winning Jeep model and it seems that it’s causing a problem.  According to an article in the Toledo Blade, that problem is the fact that only one plant in the world is currently constructing Wranglers.  The sole plant in Toledo, Ohio is not dealing with the fact that it is having to deal with such a stark increase in demand.  The Wrangler plant has been running for 20 hours a day, six days a week in attempting to get enough Wranglers to the lot.

Luckily, Jeep and the auto workers have come together to figure out a way to deal with this.  The United Auto Workers have reached an agreement that will help up the Wrangler production to 100 units a day.  Another silver lining to come out of this news story is that in order to reach this level of work, the plant will be needing to add 50 more workers to the lines.  This may even include adding a third shift.  According to Mr Manly,

“If Wrangler demand continues to grow at the rate that we’ve seen in 2011, obviously we’re going to have to look at our options and one of our options is a third shift.”

Great news not just for Wrangler sales, but also for the workforce that is currently making them.  Maybe all those Call of Duty advertisements are starting to catch on.
