Next-Gen Jeep Wrangler’s Engine Maybe a Four Cylinder

A new rumor on the engine in the next-generation Jeep Wrangler shows FCA trying to find the balance between what the drivers want and what is possible with new fuel efficiency standards.

Automotive News released today a rumor about the new engine that will be possibly be an option for the upcoming new Jeep Wrangler.  The engine is a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine code-named Hurricane.  Automotive News was told by a source what to expect from this new engine.  It will feature a “direct-injected inline-four with variable valve timing and a twin-scroll turbocharger.”  The Hurricane engine will also be an aluminum block and is expected to be 300 horsepower.

More information backing this up is an investment FCA made in April.  They put 75 million into their Trenton Engine Complex to start production on a new four-cylinder engine, like the one described above.  The plant had been making the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 previously.

Sergio Marchionne, FCA’s CEO, had also made previously statements that make the Hurricane engine seem like the truth.  He had said that the Wrangler would be needing an optional four-cylinder for its new eight-speed auto transmission.

2014 Jeep Cherokee Gets MPG Rating

Untitled

There’s comes a time when you write about something, and look at something, that’s coming out and realize you’ve dissected all you can really get off other people’s assessment and photos. That’s when frustration sets in and you just tap your foot while waiting for the clock to click down. Anticipation has been replaced by wanting to have it already. Think of it like a kid anxiously waiting for that new train set they know is downstairs but they have to wait for Santa to put it under the tree so they can feign surprise in the morning. Yeah, just like that. Anyway, this tangent is supposed to set up just wanting the 2014 Jeep Cherokee to get here already.

What’s left to even hype up at this point? The look, and the changes that come with it, have been examined to an absurd level. Well, the next news trickling out of the Jeep PR machine is the mileage information.

The 2.4-liter standard engine that is available with the Jeep Cherokee is said to get 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The four-wheel drive version lessens the mpg to 21 in the city and 28 on the highway. In comparison, the higher performance engine, the 3.2-liter Pentastar V6, gets a city mpg of 19 and highway mpg of 28. The four-drive version gets 19 city mpg and 28 highway mpg.

In terms of stacking up to the competition, the Jeep Cherokee holds up. The Chevy Equinox with standard engine gets 22 in the city and 32 highway mpg.

2014 Jeep Cherokee vs Grand Cherokee

2014-jeep-cherokee-2-optThe auto world, like many things, is filled with comparisons. How does this car stack up to that car? It’s the way things are. The comparison that the Sacramento Bee wanted to see was just how the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee stacked up to the king of the brand, the Grand Cherokee.

First up is the engine. The Cherokee will have the choice of a V6 or a 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder engine. The four-cylinder is capable of 31 MPG on the highway and can go 490 miles in a single fill-up. The V6 on the other hand gets 271 horsepower.

The Grand Cherokee with its engine gets 290 horsepower but lacks the fuel mileage. The only way for it to get into the 30s range is to have the EcoDiesel V6 engine.

One thing to note that the Cherokee has over the Grand Cherokee is that it will have new nine-speed transmission. The Grand Cherokee will still only have eight-speed transmission.

The Jeep Cherokee seems poised to offer a new form of luxury and comfort that doesn’t take away from the quality of the Jeep’s typical capability. While the new design might have taken time for fans to appreciate, they’ve seemingly gotten on board for the potential of something new and ground-breaking.
